Three Ways to Look Really Dumb on Twitter
Posted by aonenetworks On November 23, 2012When it comes to Twitter, not all of us know how to use it correctly. It’s not because we’re inept, it’s just because we’re inexperienced. If you’re new to the platform, it’s likely you’ll make some mistakes. Here are three common mistakes newbies to Twitter make, and you should correct before they become straight-out disasters.
Forgetting About Retweet Space
The first thing you have know as a Twitter newbie is that you have 140 characters. The second lesson you should learn is that people need around twenty characters to be able to retweet something. So if you use all 140 characters, they won’t be able to retweet without some adjusting. Instead of making them do that, just cut your tweet short a tad.
Leaving Long Links in Your Tweets
This is probably the most common mistake made on Twitter, and it’s completely and utterly unnecessary. There are several link shorteners – Google has their own, but you can also use bit.ly and ow.ly – that not only shorten the link so it’s more Tweet friendly, but also allow you to track the clickthroughs and popularity of a particular link.
Twitter Handles That Are Just Too Long
Are you noticing something in particular about these tips? You got it – things are just too long. Twitter is designed for people who are short and to the point, and if you aren’t, then you’re wasting your time. If you have a long handle, you’re wasting space on your Tweet. Keep your handles short – but relevant, of course – to increase the amount of space you have to say something important to your audience.
